Montessori History
Maria Montessori was born in Italy in 1870 and became one of the first Italian women to study medicine. Through her work with children, she became interested in their development and in finding better ways to support their education. She believed that children were naturally curious and capable of learning independently when given the right environment.
In 1907, Montessori opened the first Casa dei Bambini, or “Children’s House,” in Rome. There, she observed children closely and developed educational materials that encouraged concentration, movement, and independent learning. Her approach quickly gained international attention and spread to many countries. Montessori continued writing, teaching, and training educators until her death in 1952. Today, Montessori schools can be found around the world.
